Andrew AlbaneseHurricane Sandy, the superstorm of 2012, will go down as one for the record books in numerous categories – for flooding, for amount of rainfall, and for its terrible impact on human lives and livelihoods. In Manhattan, the epicenter of American trade book publishing and so much other media, the long days without power and communications are taking their own silent toll.

“On the Publishers Weekly web site, we have a rundown the status of various publishers, and we are keeping that updated,” Andrew Albanese, the magazine’s features editor, tells CCC’s Chris Kenneally. “In Monday’s issue, we’ll have roundup of how stores and retailers in the area are coping, and what may be the impact, short-term and long-term. My big fear is that this storm could be a fatal blow for stores in hard-hit communities. Let’s hope not.”

Rose Fox and the review of the week’s reviews returns next week.

Every Friday, CCC’s “Beyond the Book” speaks with the editors and reporters of “Publishers Weekly” for an early look at the news that publishers, editors, authors, agents and librarians will be talking about when they return to work on Monday.
