April 10, 1924: Richard Simon and Max Schuster published their first book.

Andrew AlbaneseSimon & Schuster executives launched a centennial celebration this week with the release of the Simon & Schuster 100, 100 books chosen to represent the breadth and depth of the company’s publishing programs.

The Big Five publisher’s new owner, private equity firm KKR, appears poised to grow the company significantly, notes Andrew Albanese, Publishers Weekly executive editor.

A centerpiece of the celebration arrives April 8 at New York City’s Town Hall auditorium. Author! Author!: A Simon & Schuster Centennial Celebration will feature more than 30 notable S&S authors for “an evening of stories, conversation, and memories.

“In case you’re wondering: April 10, 1924—that’s when Richard Simon and Max Schuster published their first book,” Albanese tells CCC’s Chris Kenneally. “A work of great fiction? A work of serious history? Poetry perhaps? Nope—a book of crossword puzzles. Humble beginnings for what is now the third largest U.S. trade publisher.”

Every Friday, CCC’s “Velocity of Content” features the editors and reporters of Publishers Weekly for an early look at what news publishers, editors, authors, agents, and librarians will be talking about when they return to work on Monday.
