Recorded earlier this month at the Mediabistro-organized MediaApp Summit, December 2012, and featuring Jason Boog, Editor, Mediabistro Publishing, Amy Martin Product Marketing Manager, Wattpad, and Christopher Kenneally, Copyright Clearance Center.
Noting the community focus of Wattpad, which claims 11 million monthly readers, Martin said, “We see a future where readers are discovering, sharing, and recommending stories as easily as they would a song or a video. New stories are streamed to readers just like episodes, based on what they like and who they follow. This means for me, as a reader, I’m interacting with fans and the writer as I’m reading the story. It’s a new social dynamic that hasn’t really existed in publishing before. For a writer, it’s a way to build a loyal, emotionally connected relationship with the people who are discovering my work.”
Earlier, Boog detailed the success stories of several authors from GalleyCat’s weekly list of self-published bestsellers. “A revolution is going to sweep through publishing, and it is about authors taking over,” commented Kenneally, host of CCC’s podcast series.
Amy Martin is the Product Marketing Manager at Wattpad. Before joining Wattpad, Amy worked overseas as a digital consultant at a startup communications agency in the Middle Eastern country of Qatar. Early in her career, way before YouTube came around, Amy was part of a team exploring online collaborative video production with the Canadian Broadcasting Company.
Jason Boog is Editor, Mediabistro Publishing where he curates publishing events and shapes the digital publishing curriculum at Mediabistro. He also edits the GalleyCat and AppNewser blogs. His work has appeared in The Believer, NPR Books, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Granta, Salon.com, and Peace Corps Writers.
