Amazon.com announces KDP Select, designed to woo publishers and authors to participate in the Kindle store and the controversial Amazon Prime e-book Lending program. Earlier this week, PW’s Andrew Albanese notes, the university libraries that form the digitization initiative known as HathiTrust filed their answer to the Authors Guild suit against them. Elsewhere in the magazine, PW has it annual feature on African-American publishing.
Rose Fox takes note of review for two major history books: America’s Great Debate by Fergus M. Bordewich, which digs up the roots of the Compromise of 1850 that temporarily staved off civil war, and 1616: The World in Motion by Thomas Christensen, a thematic exploration of a single year around the world that covers the Dutch East India Company, the emerging voices of women as writers, and Kepler’s calculation of the laws of planetary motion.
