The average entry-level salary for publishing employees at the Big Five trade publishers and Scholastic in New York City is now $47,583, up from a pre-pandemic level of $38,583, according to a recent Publishers Weekly survey.
“The 23.3% jump came during a period when consumer prices rose 12.4%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics,” notes PW senior writer Andrew Albanese.
“Publishing industry salaries have been an important issue in the wake of the pandemic, and most of the major houses appear headed in a better direction,” he tells CCC’s Chris Kenneally.
According to publishers polled in this survey, median compensation for staff with less than five years’ experience was $46,000 for editorial, $48,000 for sales and marketing, and $61,500 for operations and production.
