“The election of Donald Trump was not only a shock to the nation, but also to publishers, and many are now pivoting to put some books on Trump, and America in the Age of Trump, onto their Spring 2017 lists,” reports Andrew Albanese, Publishers Weekly senior writer.
“Atlantic Monthly has what is very likely to prove a bestseller—How the Hell Did This Happen? by celebrated political humor writer P. J. O’Rourke,” Albanese tells CCC’s Chris Kenneally. “O’Rourke proposes to take us from the primaries through what he calls his ‘come-to-Satan’ moment’—endorsing Hillary Clinton. When a P.J. O’Rourke tirade shows up in Trump’s Twitter feed at 3 a.m. sometime this spring, you’ll know why.”
Also this week, Abrams’ Image imprint, a line of illustrated humor and reference titles for adults, retreated from publishing Bad Little Children’s Books, featuring parodies of classic children’s book covers based on a range of controversial and often blatantly offensive themes. The move followed a critical blog post, “It’s Not Funny. It’s Racist,” from a former librarian.
