From selling books as objects to providing a service

Andrew AlbaneseLooking to reduce costs and improve customer experience, educational publisher Pearson announced earlier this week that it will shift its entire U.S. textbook publishing program to a digital first model.

“All future releases of Pearson’s 1,500 current U.S. textbook titles will be updated in digital versions only – transitioning the publisher from selling books as objects to providing a service” explains Andrew AlbanesePublishers Weekly senior writer.

“We will see where Pearson takes things from here—but we can say this much, in the educational space, the digital shift is about to accelerate,” he tells CCC’s Chris Kenneally. “There are all kinds of challenges coming from within — open educational resources and open access, just to name two.”

Every Friday, CCC’s “Beyond the Book” speaks with the editors and reporters of “Publishers Weekly” for an early look at the news that publishers, editors, authors, agents and librarians will be talking about when they return to work on Monday.
