As BookExpo 2018 opened this week, a trio of “copyright heavyweights” had warm words for the Trump Administration, reports Andrew Albanese, Publishers Weekly senior writer.
“Authors Guild executive director Mary Rasenberger said it feels to her like ‘there’s a reset’ in Washington, when it comes to copyright policy,” he tells CCC’s Chris Kenneally. “Keith Kupferschmid, CEO of the Copyright Alliance, echoed that – he said ‘the whole environment has changed’ in Washington.”
Panelist Maria Pallante, Association of American Publishers CEO and former US Register of Copyrights, later moderated a “Leadership Roundtable” featuring John Sargent, Macmillan CEO; Simon & Schuster CEO Carolyn Reidy; and Penguin Random House CEO Markus Dohle.
“In her intro, Pallante noted that virtually all categories are up in the first quarter of 2018,” Albanese notes. “Sargent noted that the industry still faces some serious challenges in protecting the current publishing and retail ecosystem amid changing consumer habits.”
Every Friday, CCC’s “Beyond the Book” speaks with the editors and reporters of “Publishers Weekly” for an early look at the news that publishers, editors, authors, agents and librarians will be talking about when they return to work on Monday.
