If you’re a lawyer, you call it, “I-P.” If you work in Hollywood, or at a big Manhattan publishing house, you call it, “entertainment” or “information.” And if you’re an avid reader, a loyal theatre-goer, or a music fan, you call it a very important part of your life. And we are all talking about the Creative Economy.
On Friday, March 30, at the Kernochan Center for Law, Media and the Arts at Columbia Law School, Copyright Clearance Center presents, “OnCopyright 2012: Advancing the Creative Economy.” This bi-annual event will focus on the health and future of the global “creative economy” at a time of changing technology, economic uncertainty and a mixed prognosis for artists, authors, publishers, musicians, filmmakers and other creators.
For this edition of CCC’s podcast series “Beyond the Book,” OnCopyright 2012 host Ellis Henican gives us his spirited and engaging take on the creative economy. Ellis Henican is a columnist for Newsday and a political analyst at the Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network. He has written two New York Times bestsellers, Home Team with New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton and In the Blink of an Eye with NASCAR legend Michael Waltrip.
OnCopyright 2012 won’t be just another copyright debate. It is designed to foster discussions that can lead to meaningful solutions to the copyright challenges of our time. CCC is bringing together local, national and international thought leaders, creators and policy makers for panel discussions about the vital role of copyright and creativity in the advancement of science and the arts.
John Howkins, a ground-breaking thinker on creativity and innovation, opens the day. He literally wrote the book on our topic: The Creative Economy as well as the follow-up, Creative Ecologies. Also appearing is Robert Levine, former executive editor of Billboard Magazine, and author of Free Ride: How Digital Parasites are Destroying the Culture Business and How the Culture Business Can Fight Back.
