Hundreds of librarians, publishers, consultants, and technologists will soon trek to the American southeast coast. The destination for their pilgrimage is the annual Charleston Conference. Since 1980, the Charleston Conference, in South Carolina, has made it possible for publishing executives to debate critical issues with all types of professional librarians in a friendly and informal environment.
In a special preview of the Charleston Conference, where Copyright Clearance Center is proud to be a bronze sponsor, CCC’s Chris Kenneally speaks with Katina Strauch, the conference founder and editor of Against the Grain, and Leah Hinds, assistant director for the Charleston Information Group. “This year, our theme is to ‘accentuate the positive.’ I just think we have to start thinking very positively about the possibilities of improving what we do as librarians, and how we do it,” Strauch says.
A trio of CCC executives will speak at the Charleston Conference: On November 8, Tim Bowen, Director, Academic Products & Services, joins a panel detailing CCC’s “Get It Now” content delivery service; also November 8, Skott Klebe appears with other textmining experts for a discussion on “Negotiating Access”; and on November 10, Michelle Norell, Sr. Account Manager, Strategic Accounts, address the dilemma of “Copyright & The Cloud.”
“Inter-library loans delivery times just weren’t meeting patrons’ expectations,” Bowen tells Kenneally. “CCC worked very closely with California State University libraries first in a pilot program, and we’ve since offered the product to every institution. They’ve seen a dramatic decrease in the time spent to get the content they need.”
Katina Strauch is Assistant Dean for Technical Services and Collection Development at the College of Charleston (SC) Libraries. This is the eighth year for Leah Hinds working with the Charleston Conference, where she coordinates the speakers; manages sponsorships and advertising; plans off-site events and catering; and maintains the conference website.
