In an unconventional political year, no one should expect conventional party conventions. As the Republican gathering in Cleveland this week gives way to the Democratic meeting coming to Philadelphia next week, that is the only reliable prediction.
Politics and publishing are long-time bedfellows, of course. Biographies, manifestos, exposes and histories reliably ride the campaign coattails. For the top titles on the publishing ticket Andrew Albanese, Publishers Weekly senior writer, has prepared some nominations.
“Coming this fall, is really timely book by Gary Younge, from Nation Books. Another Day in the Death of America presents a series of portraits of young people taken from us far too soon by the gun violence that has become all to common in America,” he tells CCC’s Chris Kenneally.
“Out in September is Dark Mirror: Edward Snowden and the American Surveillance State from Barton Gellman, who offers an inside account of the surveillance-industrial revolution and its discontents,” Albanese notes.
