Digital changes everything – and disrupting business models is only part of it. Relationships among partners likewise are undergoing radical transformation. In the quiet halls of public libraries, the rising volume of buzz you hear is what to do about those publishers.
“The tension between libraries and publishers is at a fever pitch,” PW’s Andrew Albanese tells CCC’s Chris Kenneally. “The developments that could come in the next few months could have a deep, fundamental impact on our reading future.” He cites a recent price hike for e-books for public libraries from Random House, as well as pending cases that will impact libraries including the Authors Guild suit against the Hathi Trust.
In her weekly round-up of reviews, PW’s Rose Fox notes intriguing examples of genre blending and bending, including science fiction from Walter Mosely (creator of the Ezekiel “Easy” Rawlins series) and Barry Grant’s Sherlock Holmes and the Swedish Enigma, a 21st-century mystery featuring a “defrosted” Holmes and his new sidekick, James Wilson.
