Hachette Book Group and Macmillan are raising entry-level starting salaries, reports Andrew Albanese, Publishers Weekly senior writer.
“Two of the Big Five publishers are raising starting salaries to $47,500, for a 35-hour work week,” he tells CCC’s Chris Kenneally.
“For Macmillan, it’s a big jump as starting salaries there were said to be $42K, and it comes last week after Hachette announced it was raising entry-level salaries from $45,000 to $47,500 after a review.”
Penguin Random House and HarperCollins peg starting salaries at $45,000, according to PW. Unionized staff at HC began a strike in November 2022 calling for a $50K minimum salary. Simon & Schuster’s base salary rate is $50,000 for a 40-hour work week.
