New calendars hang on walls in cubes and offices around the country. It’s 2012, and the only safe prediction for the publishing industry is that twelve months from now, the world won’t look anything like it did in January.
For the first program of the New Year, PW’s Andrew Albanese offers his suggestions for resolutions that the book business and its partners might want to make in 2012. Leading his list is, “Amazon must resolve to stop being bullies.” As for all those court cases around digitization of books and e-book publishing rights, Albanese proposes this resolution, “Let’s try to cut back on the lawyers’ billable hours.”
In her round-up of the coming week’s reviews section, Rose Fox notes with interest Dylan Evans’s Risk Intelligence, which discusses how to estimate risk and live with uncertainty, and Through the Door of Life: A Jewish History Between Genders – author Joy Ladin, says Fox, “brings literary artistry to the often painful story of her gender transition.”
