The Google Books Case has moved forward – now sans settlement – as the Authors Guild recently met an important deadline set forth by Judge Denny Chin in the six-year-old litigation and filed their motion for class certification. “The case is now on a path where the long-running legal drama over Google’s program to scan library books could ultimately lead to a ruling as to whether Google’s book scanning is fair use, or amounts to copyright infringement,” PW’s Andrew Albanese tells CCC’s Chris Kenneally.
In her round-up of the last reviews section for PW in 2011, Rose Fox has word on genre-bending fiction from Julianna Baggott, whose first horror novel, Pure, “blends fabulist imagery with big cinematic landscapes,… drawing inspiration from the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, children’s songs, and fairy tales.” Non-fiction titles look forward to Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee year, marking the 60th anniversary of her coronation.
