When it comes to the indies, there’s a real passion for publishing

Andrew AlbaneseMiami-based Mango has come out on top in the Publishers Weekly annual round-up of the hottest US independent publishing houses, Andrew Albanese reports. According to PW, Mango’s sales rose 400% from 2016 to 2018, while staff and title output have nearly doubled. Founder Chris McKenney, a former COO of PGW, tells PW that a diverse list from diverse authors has made a critical difference.

“Mango seeks out new voices, different backgrounds, and exceptional talents,” Albanese tells CCC’s Chris Kenneally. “An eclectic mix of staff has led to an eclectic list in subjects that includes cooking, crafts, feminism, health, LGBTQ issues, self-help, spirituality, and mindfulness as well as fiction and poetry titles plus children’s and young adult books.

“When it comes to the indies on our list, there’s a real passion for publishing,” he says. “As a small publisher you put everything into your books—there’s usually no backlist or blockbusters to carry the load.”
