Of the world’s vast collection of data –information and creative works in every imaginable form, physical as well as digital — 90% came into existence in the last two years.
Big Data holds big promise for science, business and the human condition to create new value, realize medical breakthroughs and better human lives. As Big Data grows ever bigger in publishing, the burdens grow, too: how to extract insights, accelerate innovation and grow revenue.
On Thursday, April 14, at the London Book Fair, Haralambos “Babis” Marmanis, Copyright Clearance Center’s Chief Technology Officer, compared the promise of data to interplanetary exploration.
“Your data is your planet,” Marmanis said. “And we are entering a new world where we all have the opportunity to make the most of this precious resource. Your tools have never been more robust. The results of your mining have never been more in demand, or more important.
“The infrastructure capabilities and the algorithmic capabilities available to us today have reached the point where those things are no longer the bottleneck. The bottleneck is only in our imaginations and in our ability to innovate… to translate that power into business value… and to give customers the information they need in ways that serve them best.”
At CCC, Babis Marmanis is responsible for driving the technology vision and the implementation of all software systems. He earned a PhD in Applied Mathematics from Brown University, and an MSc from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
