More an environmental landmark than collection of artifacts, the American Indian Cultural Center & Museum that is emerging on the edge of downtown Oklahoma City has surprising lessons to teach on content ownership and re-use.
“We’re harvesting cultural materials, stories, imagery,” AICCM’s Shoshana Wasserman tells Chris Kenneally. “We approach that in a very respectful manner, allowing and actually empowering each of the tribes to determine what’s appropriate for public consumption, what they want shared about their culture, and what they do not.”
Wasserman shared her insights while attending the recent “Museum and the Web” conference where cultural institutions from around the world were gathered.
